Last Friday, students across Wickersley Partnership Trust secondary schools celebrated European Day of Languages – an annual event recognising the rich diversity of languages spoken across Europe and around the world. The day was packed with engaging activities designed to spark curiosity about language and culture, inspire learning, and bring the curriculum to life.
One of the highlights was a baking competition, where students were challenged to create bakes inspired by European countries, whether through design, recipe, or cultural theme. With entries from Years 7, 8 and 9, the creativity and effort on display were outstanding, and all participants were praised for their innovative ideas.
Students also took part in interactive language activities, from speaking challenges with teachers in foreign languages to language-themed treasure hunts. Swedish taster sessions and a food tasting experience – featuring dishes from Spain, France, Greece, Norway, and Holland – added an extra layer of cultural exploration.
Additionally, workshops led by visitors from the University of Sheffield gave the students a chance to try out German, Russian, Portuguese and Chinese through games, songs and other fun activities that helped embed their new vocabulary.
The day concluded with The Spanish Blooket Tournament, hosted by Miss Qaddar, where students put their knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and culture to the test in a fast-paced, competitive quiz.
At WPT, however, our MFL curriculum goes beyond vocabulary and grammar, it empowers students to communicate confidently, explore diverse cultures and think globally. From building essential oracy and literacy skills to encouraging curiosity and cultural empathy, our students are developing the tools to connect with the world around them.
It was fantastic to see so many students engaged and inspired to explore languages and cultures during this year’s European Day of Languages. Events like these highlight the value of multilingualism and showcase how we celebrate creativity, learning and cultural understanding across our Trust.
Thank you to all of our schools, staff and students for once again bringing languages to life!
