Monday 10th to Friday 14th March was the first ever Rotherham Girls Week. The aim was to get as many girls active as possible, especially within the community. The week saw over 1200 girls taking part in sport, with 54 schools involved.
On Monday 10th, Aston Hall Y6 girls delivered a carousel of five activities to their fellow classmates. Each activity was planned, and delivered by the girls, for the rest of the class to take part in. Some of the activities included dodgeball, handball, and an obstacle course. The girls were exceptional leaders, and enjoyed taking ownership.
On Tuesday 11th March, the Rotherham School Games Team hosted the Catch, Bat, and Bowl Festival in collaboration with Whiston Parish Church Cricket Club. The event saw 17 schools attend, including Brinsworth Whitehill and Foljambe. The aim of this event was to be a stepping stone for Y3/4 girls, allowing them to experience cricket for the first time. The activities they took part in developed their throwing, catching, bowling, and batting skills.
Next up on the Wednesday 12th March was the Inspire and Engage Dodgeball Festival, taking place at Cranworth Road. The event saw 16 schools attend, including Rawmarsh Community School, Brinsworth Whitehill, and Monkwood. This included regular dodgeball, queen dodgeball, and jailball. The RCS Sports Leaders were a credit to Rawmarsh, they encouraged the girls, and worked collaboratively alongside other members of school staff.
On Thursday 13th March, all the girl Sports Leaders from Aston Lodge delivered a PE session to the whole of KS1, where they were tasked with planning engaging activities for the Y1 and Y2 children. Despite everyone being in their World Book Day costumes, the girls managed to successfully deliver all their activities to a wide range of characters! Some of the activities included Knights and Dragon’s, football, and basketball. Despite the little bit of rain at the start, the sun eventually came out and we saw lots of smiles on faces. A huge well done to the girls for their positivity towards their younger cohort!
Friday 14th March saw the final event of Rotherham Girls’ Week, this was the Come Try Rugby Taster at Maltby Rugby Club. The event saw 17 schools, including Rawmarsh Community School, Brinsworth Whitehill, and Rawmarsh Ashwood take part. The event involved a carousel of rugby activities, each delivered by Rawmarsh Community School Sports Leaders, in collaboration with Maltby Rugby Club, who offer free rugby sessions on Tuesday nights for all children.
A massive thank you to the Maltby Rugby Club for their hospitality, as well as the Titans Community Foundation for all their help. Finally, a big thank you to the Rawmarsh Community School Y9 Sports Leaders, who made sure the event was a huge success!
