Music Services

Great music education is a partnership between classroom teachers, specialist teachers, professional performers and a host of other organisations, including those from the arts, charity and voluntary sectors. Most children will have their first experience of music at school. It is important that music education of high quality is available to as many of them as possible: it must not become the preserve of those children whose families can afford to pay for music tuition. While music touches the lives of all young people, the disadvantaged can benefit most. Music helps bind pupils into the wider life of the school. Schools cannot do everything alone: they need the support of a wider local music structure.

At Wickersley Partnership Trust, we recognise the important role that music plays in children’s academic and social development and in improving the ethos of the school. We’ve split our music strands into two distinct parts as part of our Entitlement and Enrichment promise. All students are entitled to specialist, high-quality music provision, including wider opportunities instrument lessons. All students are offered high-quality, individual music tuition by professional tutors. This is our Enrichment provision.

Our Core Music Offer

At primary, students have opportunity to experience and access a variety of different instruments, through either whole-class ensemble teaching, or where possible small-group peripatetic teaching. Students participate in school and Trust-wide performances, and attend events such as Young Voices.

At secondary, students who study music have small-group instrumental lessons with specialist teachers every two weeks. We have removed the financial barriers and made this an entitlement to all and not an opportunity for the minority who can afford instrumental lessons. This gives learners who may otherwise be overlooked, or face barriers to learning, the opportunity to explore, engage, and broaden their musical horizons. This supports the music class curriculum and staff work closely together to identify talent that can be nurtured further.

Our Peripatetic Offer

We offer all students in the Trust from KS1-KS4 the chance to be taught an instrument (including woodwind, brass, string, percussion and vocals) by a group of professional music tutors. We currently have over 200 students across the Trust undertaking weekly 20-minute lessons. Students across all Key Stages are encouraged to take part.

Peripatetic tutors also support our music departments in the preparation of internal and external examinations.
