Climbing & Canoeing for Wickersley Sports Science Students

Our Y11 Sports Studies students at Wickersley school and Sports College have been out developing their climbing and watersports skills this term with trips to outdoor crags and canoeing on the River Don.

The trip to Pleasley Vale near Mansfield saw them make the transition from indoor climbing to a real rock face. As well as developing their climbing skills, they experienced belaying from both the top & the bottom of the crag, allowing them to complete the climb by ‘topping out’ rather than being lowered to the floor.

On the River Don, they took their canoe skills to the next level, working together on both flat and moving water sections of the river. Both trips saw a strong emphasis on our student’ ability to develop their team work and communication skills in order to overcome challenges along the way.
